LegacyYou may not have to abandon that expensive capital investment because it doesn't seem to work with a new computer. Some old systems do not like being modernised. Decades ago programmers wrote software that didn't benefit from what we can call "layers of abstraction" allowing us to run software on different computers. Web browsers like Firefox & Internet Explorer and new ranges of open source freeware make excellent examples of modern "portability". However 20 years ago: if your PC or Mac did not have exactly the right processor or even Bios chip your "bespoke software" may not have worked. These days, expensive installations with bespoke software and hardware can be given new leases of life. With carefull deployment of new technology we can integrate with legacy equipment. |
